Dera Jagmalwali follows the spiritual tradition of Sant Mat, a timeless path of inner realization that has been taught by saints across generations. This path emphasizes the direct experience of the divine presence within oneself, achieved through meditation, ethical living, and devotion to a living Master. Sant Mat teaches that the divine essence exists in every individual, and through sincere practice, the soul can awaken to this profound truth.
The spiritual journey at Dera Jagmalwali is supported by simple and clear practices that seekers are encouraged to follow daily throughout their lives. A central aspect of this journey is Simran, a meditation practice involving the repetition of the inner mantra, or Naam, which is given at initiation. This meditation helps to focus the mind, calm restless thoughts, and deepen the connection with the inner divine presence. In addition to Simran, Seva, or selfless service, plays a vital role. This involves serving the Master, the Dera, and others with humility and without any expectation of reward, which fosters devotion and selflessness. Regular participation in Satsang—spiritual gatherings and discourses—is also encouraged, as these gatherings reinforce the teachings and support steady progress on the spiritual path.
Ethical living is an integral aspect of this journey, including following a pure vegetarian diet, abstaining from alcohol and intoxicants, and practicing truthfulness, humility, compassion, and simplicity in daily life.
At the heart of the Sant Mat path is the living Master, who provides essential spiritual guidance and fosters inner awakening. The Master is not just a teacher; rather, they serve as a sacred channel through which the Divine uplifts and guides souls. A crucial role of the Master is to initiate seekers through Naam Daan, a sacred act that establishes a connection to the divine presence within. This initiation marks the beginning of the true spiritual journey, opening the door to inner realms and providing the technique for Simran—meditation on the inner mantra—which leads to self-realization.
Through Naam Daan, the Master offers seekers the fundamental tools to navigate the spiritual path: the inner mantra (Naam) to be repeated during meditation, the connection to the Shabd or Sound Current, and a personal spiritual bond between Master and disciple. Beyond this initiation, the Master continues to provide personal mentorship and guidance, answering spiritual questions, helping seekers experience the inner light and sound, and nurturing their ongoing progress on the path.
An expression of deep devotion and surrender at Dera Jagmalwali is the phrase, “Dhan Dhan Satguru Tera Hi Aasra,” which means “Blessed, blessed is the Satguru; You alone are my refuge.” This chant is frequently recited by disciples as a heartfelt acknowledgment that all spiritual progress and protection come through the grace of the Satguru. It strengthens the bond between seeker and Master and inspires humility, faith, and steadfastness on the spiritual journey.
